This is one of the most important wetlands of Costa Rica. Most visitors come to fish in the river Frío ("Cold river") and other rivers that flow into lake Caño Negro.
The dry season is the best time to come and spot crocodiles, caymans and other big mammals. Large number of migratory and aquatic birds can be seen too.
The nearest town is Caño Negro, where the main offices are located. Cabinas are located there too.
One way of visiting the refuge is by hiring a boat from the town of Los Chiles or taking a bus from Upala.
