Costa Rica has 5% of all the species in the planet. This means that in a very small area there is a very high density of living organisms with the most complex forests in the world.
Approximately 25% of the territory is protected (conservation area) and most are part of the national parks, biological reserves and others. This is why many tourists choose Costa Rica as their favorite destination.
There are some 850 birds, 205 mammals, more than 35,000 species of insects, 160 species of amphibians, 220 species of reptiles, and around 1,013 species of fresh & saltwater fish.
