The province of Guanacaste has an extension of 10.140 km2 (about 3.917 square miles), it is the second largest province of Costa Rica. The main city is Liberia.
Located in the western side of the country, it joined Costa Rica on July 25th, 1824.

The Guanacaste province contains some of the rarest tropical dry forest in the world. It ranges from coastal beaches to the wetlands surrounding the Gulf of Nicoya, to an inland volcanic mountain chain.
Some of the largest National Parks in the country are in Guanacaste Province, including Arenal Lagoon, Santa Rosa, Guanacaste, Tenorio and Miravalles.
