San José city was never properly founded. Founding for the early Spaniards of the sixteenth century ment a political and religious ceremony that included mass, name-giving and a series of rituals to form a new "cabildo" (town hall). The birth of this city originated when this place became a passing station between the valley of Aserrí and Barva.

In the seventeenth century there were only two important cities: Cartago and Espíritu Santo de Esparza.

In 1736 the León town hall of Nicaragua ordered the building of a hermitage in the Valley of Aserrí. They built it in a place known as "La boca del Monte de Curridabá" because it was a centric place and had an easy access to Aserrí. Father Juan Manuel de Casasola y Córdoba finished this temple in 1738 and dedicated it to Saint Joseph (San José). It was located where now stands Scaglietti store, behind the Central Bank.

During the second half of the eighteenth century, Boca del Monte began to be known as "La villita" or "Villa nueva". It was until 1801 that Tomás de Acosta called it officially "San José".

In 1776 the hermitage was relocated to where now stands the "Catedral Metropolitana" and it was just a parish. In the year 1783 there were almost five thousand settlers that worked the land farming corn, cane and wheat.
