Tips & Other advice
One way to save money is to ask the locals which families can rent a bed. It is not uncommon to find very cheap rentals and by the way, taste some traditional Costarican cuisine.
The bus leaves early morning and shortly after lunch, so plan accordingly to avoid staying one extra night and spending more money.
This is a tourist magnet, so it is easy to find new tourist friends to form a party to explore the reserves. Many tourists also stay for months, taking Spanish lessons in Santa Elena.
