Money
From Wiki Costa Rica
(Redirected from Colon)
The official currency in Costa Rica is the "colón", named after Cristóbal Colón (Christopher Columbus) who discovered Costa Rica in 1502. Costaricans also say "pesos" instead of "colones".

Bills
[edit]
Changing currency
- Dollars can be changed at any bank. Nevertheless, some stores will accept dollars. If in doubt, just ask. Usually bills lower than $50 will be acceptable.
[edit]
Tipping
- Baggage handlers in the airport usually accept (and expect) 1000 colones (2 dollars) for their service.
- All restaurants, by law, include a 15% service tip in the check, so it is not necessary to leave extra tip on the table. No costarican does this, although tourists will sometimes get better service because waiters will expect this tip. It is not mandatory at all.
- Taxi drivers and pizza delivery guys do not need to be tipped.
