Marino Ballena National Park is located in the pacific coast, 13 km south of Playa Dominical. This park was created in 1989 in order to protect several marine species. It is named after the Humpback whale, which migrate to this area every year ("Ballena" means whale).

Location and Geology

Uvita beach in the north and Ballena beach form a crescent necklace with three islands known as the three sisters. Seen from the air (below) it forms a figure resembling a whale´s tail.

The beach is relatively undeveloped, there are showers, tables and restrooms, but are not in working condition. Most of the roads are acceptable, but an SUV is preferred.

The beach has gray sand, is very plain and has few rocks and very few man-made constructions visible. Very few local and foreign tourists are seen, compared to popular beaches like Jaco or Playa Dominical. No fires are allowed on the beach.

Services available

There are several cabinas, 1 restaurant and 1 bar in the land adjacent to the beach (50m inland). There is also places to camp and bathe for a nominal fee. Park entrance is 600 colones per person.

Services near the park include a supermarket and an Internet Cafe (2km north on the Costanera highway).

Tips

As with all beaches, bring your insect repellent, although the only times the mosquitoes bite are between 5 and 6pm. Afterwards, there are not sot many as compared to other beaches.

Open hours: 6.00 - 18:00. Open everyday including Christmas.

Address From San Jose through San Isidro: take the Inter-American highway towards the city of Cartago, then continue south to San Isidro (aprox 131 km). Once in San Isidro, take road east to Playa Dominical (40 km), and then south to Uvita (12km), continue south for 2km and turn right at sign. Alternate route: from any town in central pacific coast, take Costanera Sur highway south, traveling through the towns of Jaco, Quepos, Dominical, and Uvita. Continue south for 2km and turn right at sign.
