This building is considered the most impressive architectural structure of San José. It began construction in 1890 and the reason for its construction was because a very important Spanish singer (Adelina Patti) could not perform in Costa Rica for there was no theater in the country. This motivated the coffee tycoons of the country to tax their coffee to start building the theater. Work finished in 1897 and was inaugurated with the opera Faust, interpreted by the Paris Opera.
